Move Over Ellis Island - .NYC is the Digital Gateway to New York New York-Based Small Businesses Benefit From Launch of Latest Geographic Domains

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Oct. 8, 2014) – Residents living in New York City now have a place online to call home with the newest domain name extension, .NYC, now available for public registration. With the availability of the new, geo-specific generic top level domains (gTLD), small business owners in New York City have a unique opportunity to own a piece of the Web that quickly and efficiently tells their location.

“New York City is home to some of the most expensive real estate in the country. The 21st century real estate boom will also be online - with .NYC playing a key role in that boom,” said GoDaddy Senior Vice President and General Manager Mike McLaughlin. “The .NYC extension gives anyone in New York City a chance to display their New York pride online. With the domain name extension just launching, there are a tremendous number of quality names available for any New Yorker to purchase.”

While .NYC lives online, it is opening to much fanfare across the city. GoDaddy, the world’s largest technology provider dedicated to small businesses, has advertising blanketing the city, from subway cars to coffee sleeves. GoDaddy is also having a 110-foot barge float up and down the Hudson River with a special message for New Yorker-eyes only.

The barge is set to run in the morning starting near Governor’s island and run up to 77th St. The barge will make multiple passes and can be seen at places like Battery Park, Dewitt Clinton Park and Riverside Park.

Other celebrations include free taxis around the Five Boroughs in honor of .NYC, a news conference featuring Mayor Bill Deblasio.

GoDaddy and its advertising agency, Barton F. Graf 9000, take a tongue-in-cheek jab at New Jersey with the message being broadcast on the barge. Barton F. Graf 9000 CEO Gerry Graf joked, “GoDaddy and New York are offering geo-specific domain names with .NYC. New Jersey does not have one. Here’s hoping nobody there hears about this.”

.NYC is part of a large Internet expansion the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) initiated several years ago. GoDaddy plans to release more domain name extensions every week, through 2015, thus expanding the domain name industry from 22 gTLDs, such as.COM, .ORG and .NET, to more than 700 in just over a year. There are currently more than 2.5 million domains registered using the new domain name extensions.

To be eligible to register a .NYC domain name, you must live New York City or one of the Five Boroughs. For details about the .NYC domain name extension and the rules around registration, visit www.GoDaddy.NYC.
